چکیده

We have used the Submillimeter Wave Astronomy Satellite to map the ground-state 110 → 101 transition of ortho-H2O at 557 GHz in the Orion molecular cloud. H2O emission was detected in Orion over an angular extent of about 20, or nearly 3 pc. The water emission is relatively weak, with line widths (3–6 km s−1) and VLSR velocities (9–11 km s−1) consistent with an origin in the cold gas of the molecular ridge. We find that the orthoH2O abundance relative to H2 in the extended gas in Orion varies between 1 and 8×10−8, with an average of 3×10−8. The absence of detectable narrow-line ortho-H18 2 O emission is used to set a 3σ upper limit on the relative ortho-H2O abundance of 7×10−8. Water vapor emission from IRC+10216 and other carbon-rich stars: model predictions and prospects for multitransition observations

We have modeled the emission of H2O rotational lines from the extreme C-rich star IRC+10216. Our treatment of the excitation of H2O emissions takes into account the excitation of H2O both through collisions, and through the pumping of the ν2 and ν3 vibrational states by dust emission and subsequent decay to the ground state. Regardless of the spatial distribution of the water molecules, the H2O...

Observations of Water Vapor Outflow from Nml Cygnus

We report new observations of the far infrared and submillimeter water vapor emission of NML Cygnus based on data gathered with the Infrared Space Observatory and the Submillimeter Wave Astronomy Satellite. We compare the emission from NML Cyg to that previously published for VY CMa and W Hya in an attempt to establish the validity of recently proposed models for the outflow from evolved stars....

Water Abundance in Molecular Cloud Cores

We present Submillimeter Wave Astronomy Satellite (SWAS) observations of the 110 → 101 transition of orthoH2O at 557 GHz toward 12 molecular cloud cores. The water emission was detected in NGC 7538, ρ Oph A, NGC 2024, CRL 2591, W3, W3(OH), Mon R2, and W33, and was not detected in TMC-1, L134N, and B335. We also present a small map of the H2O emission in S140. Observations of the H18 2 O line we...

SWAS and Arecibo observations of H2O and OH in a diffuse cloud along the line-of-sight to W51

Observations of W51 with Submillimeter Wave Astronomy Satellite (SWAS) have yielded the first detection of water vapor in a diffuse molecular cloud. The water vapor lies in a foreground cloud that gives rise to an absorption feature at an LSR velocity of 6 km s. The inferred water column density is 2.5 × 10 cm. Observations with the Arecibo radio telescope of hydroxyl molecules at ten positions...
